Learn About The DeLorme PN-40
Delorme's new high quality colour aerial imaging is a true upgrade from it's previous topo and "satellite" imagery. Comparing part by side with Google Earth, Google features a slight edge on determination, but it's cute close. And for just a portable GPS, the resolution is more than you need, and you can zoom up on specifics that provide good enough detail. Delorme's brand new subscription pricing choice of $30 to get a year's value of unlimited map getting is a better pricing device than the old "pay as you go", which can got pricey rapidly.
The Delorme PN-40 is fast, both in GPS acquisition and map re-drawing. The GPS continued to track while in my pocket. It gains a repair after being turned on usually for about 30 seconds. The map re-draws are not silky smooth if you set Earthmate PN-40 to continuously orient "heading up" as it continuously tries to control to your varying route. But in "north up" and "course up" option, wherein the map is static with your arrow is moving, the unit is very easy to implement. And also zooming out and in is nearly instantaneous, that is a lot swifter than earlier handheld GPS models with hi-res aerial maps.
Planning routes and waypoints on the included Topo software is an easy way to plan hikes, though you can also pick points on the little screen on the Delorme PN-40 unit if you don't have a computer nearby. That is a slower operation as you ought to use the four-direction round switch, which is not that easy to nagivate around extensively.
The Delorme PN-40 unit is rugged, with high impact, tough plastic on the outside, and a battery case the screws tight with finger screws to make it water resistant. The unit is easy to use but has a whole lot of layers of complexity if you want to do more. It took me several days of heavy use before I felt I knew all the menu options. There are a lot of ways to customize the Delorme Earthmate PN-40 unit, which is probably why I didn't feel I wished for much at the end of the hiking week.
Although you could use this for automatic routing, I find my regular auto GPS a lot easier to make use of for that. But for whatever off roads, such as trekking or jeep riding, this unit is actually good. I will be really amazed how the PN does everything!
